Every year, students in debate clubs defend their favourite intelligence as the most important. Logical thinkers cite engineers and doctors; linguistic minds cite lawyers and writers; kinesthetic students point to surgeons and athletes. Yet history suggests that the greatest achievements combine intelligences. Leonardo da Vinci was as strong in anatomy as in painting; Marie Curie combined mathematical rigour with the interpersonal skill to lead a laboratory; Messi's genius is kinesthetic, but his reading of the game is deeply spatial. The more intelligences a task demands, the better it reveals what human beings can do. The real question is not which intelligence wins, but which combination a problem needs.
